Spyglass
A Viewing Experience by Sarah C. Rutherford & Brandon Colaprete
Spyglass is an exercise in point-of-view concerning the stories we tell as we live our lives and the worlds we create to live them in as we form relationships with the people with whom we connect along the way. Through illustrations and abstract formal compositions, two characters, the hunter and the gatherer, explore some of the primal themes intrinsic to the human condition, such as birth, death, societal roles, the masculine, the feminine, personal development in youth, and age, connecting and disconnecting. These themes create moments that crystallize into microcosms of memory embedded within the fabric of the world defined by these intertwined individuals, woven together with the treasures and materials they scavenge. Their stories are echoed by a flock of crows, Rochester's notorious scavengers, who pick apart the assemblage and fly off to build their own worlds. The material accumulations form barriers and abstractions that prevent an outside viewer from perceiving the whole story simultaneously. Instead, fissures, portals, and lenses provide only glimpses into each little world, allowing the viewer to interpret what they see from their personal perspective, make the experience their own, and then move on with a different point of view. Sarah and Brandon conceived and constructed the entire project collaboratively.
